Asset Editor
OpenEdit's Asset Editor allows you to import assets from any location on your server into the OpenEdit Digital Asset Management system. The Asset Editor can "mount" a folder into the OpenEdit webapp, and create OpenEdit records for those items. You can then edit the metadata for those records, or add new assets, through OpenEdit, and they will be saved back into the "mounted" folder.
Locating the Asset Editor
- Log in as an administrator.
- Find the Asset Editor on the main archive page.
- It will show a list of your folders that hold assets.
- By default, it will detect any assets folders in the data/assets/ directory and add them as local imports.
- The Admin link next to each folder allows you to manage the settings for that directory.
Adding a New Imported Directory
- Click "Add New Import" within the Asset Editor.
- A new import folder will show up with a default name of "new". Also, the Admin screen will appear for the new imported folder.
- Fill in the "Name" for your import. This is the name that will be displayed in the category tree in the archive. This will also be the name of the products directory that houses the assets.
- Fill in the "External Path" with the full path to the directory you wish to import, ending with a '/'. For example, C:\assets/
- Alternatively, you can specify a directory relative to the catalog by starting your path with ./
- Select "Filesystem" from the "Import Type" dropdown. This means that records can be created generically from any normal file.
- Click "Save". You will see your new import show up within the Asset Editor window.
- That folder is now mounted in OpenEdit, and can be accessed normally from the filemanager.
Creating Records From Imported Assets
- From the Admin screen, click Create Records. This will generate the OpenEdit records for the imported assets. You will see a message that tells you the records have been successfully generated.
- You will need to run the "Create Records" link every time files are added to that directory without using OpenEdit (for example, using FTP to put new files in that directory).
Viewing and Uploading Assets
- Click on a folder from within the Asset Editor.
- It will show a gallery view of your assets. This view acts much like the filemanager, but images will be displayed in a gallery.
- For example, to upload a new asset, click on the target folder in the tree, and then select Upload File from the pencil menu.
- Records will automatically be created from uploaded files (no need to run Create Records).
- Remember that these file managing actions (upload, delete, add, copy) will affect the ACTUAL original assets files.
